Rebuilding from the Roots: “We invite participants to the 2022 Shepard Symposium on Social Justice to consider how to reconceptualize both the processes and the outcomes of DEI in all of its various shapes. More, we welcome conversation that addresses the foundations of the very systems that have made DEI necessary and ineffective. Many such programs lack more than a superficial commitment to actual change, others create their initiatives without input from or recognition of the lived experiences of their target beneficiaries. Indeed, the very idea of the “target beneficiary” perpetuates “othering” on a myriad of levels. This year, we hope to explore how, rather than just inviting participants to sit at tables that were built without them, to break down the traditional tables and create gatherings and community in intentional, meaningful, and just ways. The 2022 Shepard Symposium on Social Justice seeks to re-envision and rebuild the idea of creating change with the goal of examining systems from their roots to create solutions from the ground up with the intent of integrating equitable methodologies into our daily lives.”
